Happening Today: First Lady Dorothy McAuliffe and Women’s Healthcare Initiative to Host Service Project at Housing Families First
Today, Wednesday, April 8th, First Lady Dorothy McAuliffe and The Women’s Healthcare Initiative, a subcommittee of the Council on Women, will host a service project at Housing Families First (formerly the Hilliard House) in Henrico, Virginia. The First Lady and WHI members will serve dinner and deliver remarks at the event. The First Lady will also present a proclamation by Governor McAuliffe designating April as Women and Girls Wellness Month.
Governor McAuliffe and the First Lady have made access to affordable, quality health care for all Virginians a top priority for this administration. The Women’s Healthcare Initiative within the Council on Women focuses on health care issues specifically relevant to women and girls in the Commonwealth.
Housing Families First is a 501(c)3 organization with more than a decade of successful service to women and families experiencing homelessness. Through programs including the Hilliard House Shelter and Building Neighbors, Housing Families First provides ongoing support and encouragement necessary to move a family from homelessness to living productively in the community.
The vast majority of families experiencing homelessness are headed by single women, and more than half of these women and children have been the victims of domestic violence and abuse. By providing counseling and case management to help parents overcome the negative consequences of trauma, Housing Families First aligns with Governor McAuliffe’s goal of building a new Virginia economy where every Virginian has greater opportunity to lead a successful and prosperous life.
